PNP-9 placed on ‘full alert status’ after Sulu attack

From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 2, 2019): PNP-9 placed on ‘full alert status’ after Sulu attack

The Philippine National Police (PNP) units in Region 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) have been placed on “full alert status” starting Saturday following the June 28 attack at a military camp in Sulu, an official said Tuesday.

Brig. Gen. Froilan Quidilla, Police Regional Office-9 director, said all provincial and city directors have been ordered to intensify target hardening efforts through the strict implementation of enhanced police operations.

Seven people, including three soldiers, were killed while 22 others were wounded when two suspected suicide bombers staged a noon attack on June 28 at the headquarters of the Army’s 1st Brigade Combat Team in Sitio Tanjung, Barangay Kajatian, Indanan town.

Three of the seven slain victims were soldiers, two civilians, and the remaining two were the suspects behind the attack; while 12 of the wounded were soldiers and the remaining 10 were civilians.

Quidilla ordered all PNP units in the region to strengthen intelligence information gathering and exercise personal security as well in their respective area of responsibilities.

He also directed all police units across the region to step-up the conduct of checkpoints in all strategic areas; ensure police presence in all places of convergence; maximum deployment of police personnel in potential terrorist-targets in coordination with the military counterparts and other law enforcement agencies; strengthen security measures of all camps and detachments; and establish communication linkages with the community.

Meanwhile, Quidilla has called on the public to remain calm but vigilant as the authorities in the region are on top of the situation.

He advised civilians to promptly report any incident or presence of suspicious individuals or group to the nearest police station in their area.

He said they can also report through cellular phone number 0917-506-20-00, the PRO-9 hotline.
