WESTMINCOM: Troops engaged by Sayyaf in Basilan

Posted to the Western Mindanao Command (WESTMINCOM) Website (Apr 10 2019): Troops engaged by Sayyaf in Basilan

While traversing the road in Sitio Talisay, Upper Benembengan, Sumisip, Basilan around 8:45am today (April 10), AFP troops composed of one Army and two CAFGUs onboard two (2) motorcycles from Talisay Detachment were engaged by undetermined number of Abu Sayyaf Group members.

The incident resulted to the deaths of the 3 government troops while casualty on the enemy side is yet to be determined.

Troops of JTF Basilan are on hot pursuit of the fleeing bandits.

“The recent attack is a clear manifestation that the Abu Sayyaf Group is incapable of engaging combat troops who are conducting intensified operations in the area. Rather, they are resorting to diversionary tactics to disrupt the peaceful situation in the province,” said Lieutenant General Arnel Dela Vega, commander of the Western Mindanao Command.

“We would like to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our valiant troops. Rest assured that they will be provided with all sorts of assistance,” he added.

Updates to follow.
