The Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) has accorded medals to 10 soldiers for gallantry in action in the fight against the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandits in Sulu.
Col. Gerry Besana, Westmincom information officer, said the 10 were among the 18 soldiers wounded in a heavy firefight against the ASG bandits on Saturday in Sitio Sungkog, Barangay Kabbon Takas, Patikul, Sulu.

Lt. Gen. Arnel Dela Vega, Westmincom chief, led the awarding ceremony when he visited the wounded soldiers at the Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital in Jolo.

Accorded with the Wounded Personnel Medal (WPM) were Sgt. Gari Lacheca, Cpl. Leonel Echalar, Cpl. Glen Diaz, Cpl. Arnel Solomon, and Cpl. Glenn Rosales, all of the Army’s 14th Scout Ranger Company; Sgt. John Rex, Cpl. Julyto Cimeni, Cpl. Paul Azur, Cpl. Resnev Villanueva, and Pvt. Peter John Salvador of the 13th Scout Ranger Company.

From Jolo, Sulu, Dela Vega took the time to visit and don similar awards to two more battle casualties confined at the Ciudad Medical Zamboanga.

“Pinupuri ko ang katapangan ng ating mga sundalo at ako ay personal na nananalangin para sa kanilang agarang paggaling (I praised the bravery of our soldiers and I pray for their speedy recovery),” dela Vega said.

“Sa mga naulila ng ating mga kasamang hindi pinalad na makaligtas, asahan ninyo ang aming tulong at suporta bilang pagpupunyagi sa kanilang kabayanihan (To the orphans of our comrades who unfortunately died, rest assured we will be providing you the support and assistance in honor of their heroism),” he added.
