IMPASUGONG, Bukidnon -- A group of New People’s Army (NPA) terrorists ambushed the Philippine Army 8th Infantry Battalion (8IB) Bravo Company at Nasandigan sub-village in Kalabugao, Impasugong town, leaving three soldiers wounded.
The soldiers were on a mission to secure local government workers who carry goods and provide basic services in an event dubbed “Magbuliga Koy (peace and solidarity)” and gift-giving in a remote village, when a volley of fire burst into the soldiers aboard a military vehicle, Thursday morning, December 20
Bravo Company commanding officer 1Lt. Francis T. Vinuya said the troops hit back and engaged in a ten-minute gunfight forcing terrorists to flee.
Army medics quickly moved the wounded out to Camp Evangelista Station Hospital in Patag, Cagayan de Oro City for minor wounds treatment, while the remaining troops conduct pursuit operation to flush out the enemies.
Lt. Col. Ronald M. Illana, 8IB Commander, said the NPA terrorists used an improvised explosive device (IED), which is a violation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL).
“Once again, we denounce this desperate act of the terrorists. This only shows their true nature. This is a clear violation on CARHRIHL that prohibits the use of landmines. Use of such explosive device poses great harm to civilians, especially when placed in nearby communities,” he said.
He also pointed out that the CPP-NPA has grown desperate to win a losing battle to the extent of crossing the line and resorting to using weapons that could inflict damage to civilians.
“We are now filing a criminal case against the perpetrators who were identified by former rebels. We will continue our ground operation to prevent possible NPA atrocities and ensure people’s safety,” Lt. Col. Illana said.
