19 rebels receive assistance

From the Mindanao Times (Nov 21): 19 rebels receive assistance

Nineteen former rebels of the 71st Infantry Battalion received livelihood kits from the Department of Trade and Industry-Compostela Valley on Tuesday.

The turnover of livelihood starter kits to former rebels was held at the headquarters of the 71st IB, Purok 8, Barangay Nueva Visayas, Mawab, Compostela Valley.

1Lt. Jhocell Asis, the civil-military operations officer of the 71st IB, said the 19 rebels all came from Mawab, Maco, and Pantukan and they got assistance for goat and native chicken-raising, sari-sari stores, as well as vegetable and rice production.

The turnover ceremony was led by Lt. Col. Esteveyn Ducusin, the battalion commander of 71st IB, and DTI Compostela Valley provincial director Lucky Siegfred M Balleque.

Prior to the distribution of starter kits, Asis said the former rebels underwent livelihood training on their chosen project.

"As to many projects and programs for FRs (former rebels), there's no need to stay in the useless armed struggle so we urge other remaining members of the communist NPA terrorists (CNTs) to surrender," he added.
