The Philippine Navy (PN) will be participating for the very first time in the world’s premier and largest combined naval exercise dubbed as Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2018 scheduled on June 27 to Aug. 02 in and around the Hawaiian Islands.

Two Navy vessels, BRP Davao Del Sur (LD602) and BRP Andres Bonifacio (FF17) with an embarked AW 109 naval helicopter, a naval special operations group team and one Marine Company form part of the participating Naval Task Force (NTF) RIMPAC, led by Captain Ernesto O. Baldovino as the Commander NTF RIMPAC, while Commander, Fleet-Marine Ready Force, Commodore Toribio D. Adaci Jr. spearheads the contingent as its head of mission.

The NTF is further complemented by components from Civil Military Operations (CMO), training, medical, legal, and students from different PN education and training schools

The 700-man naval task force will represent the country in the second International Defense and Security Engagement (IDSE) of the Philippine Navy this year. The first IDSE was in Indonesia where the PN participated in the Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo 2018.

A Royal Malaysian Navy Ship (KD LEKIU F30) joined the Philippine NTF as it sailed from Cebu and has linked up with other navies (Indonesian Navy, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and Royal Australian Navy) along the way for the ASEAN++ Group Sail to RIMPAC18.

The exercise will be done ashore and at sea. Highpoint of the RIMPAC are the serialized training, advanced integration, and free play training activities. Key components of the NTF shall participate in the Surface and Air, Amphibious and Special Operations serials of the exercise.

The Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC) is a multilateral naval exercise that covers the entire spectrum of naval operations ranging from disaster response and maritime security operations to sea control and complex warfighting. This is the gathering and showcasing of the best naval assets and personnel around the globe with the end in view of promoting regional stability in the Pacific Region and sustaining cooperative relationship among the participants.

This exercise provides an opportunity for the Philippine Navy to build and enhance relationship with other navies participating in the exercise through cultural exchanges, sports and similar activities as well as engagements with the sizeable Filipino community in Hawaii.

The vigorous support from the government and its stakeholders through the modernization program, provided the PN with the capability to participate in RIMPAC 2018 further fulfilling its diplomatic role in keeping peace and stability in the region. NPAO / MCAG
