130 NPAs, supporters surrender

From the Mindanao Times (Feb 8): 130 NPAs, supporters surrender

ONE-HUNDRED thirty members and supporters of the New People’s Army (NPA) from Sumilao, Bukidnon surrendered to the local authorities and the 1st Special Forces Battalion on Feb. 7, 2018.

Capt. Norman Tagros, the civil- military operations (CMO) officer of the 403rd Infantry Brigade, said among the individuals who surrendered were two regular CPP-NPA members, 35 Militia ng Bayan members, and 93 CPP-NPA mass base supporters or members of the underground mass organizations.

They also surrendered 34 rifles and sidearms, as well as one improvised bomb.
Tagros attributed the surrender to the community support programs and the information dissemination campaign by the 403rd Infantry Brigade and its battalions.

The surrenderees were gathered in the town’s municipal gym in an activity dubbed as “Kagsabuwa Para Hu Kalinaw” (Unity for Peace). They were received by Sumilao Mayor Jose Antonio Villo and Brig. Gen. Eric C Vinoya, commander of the 403rd IB.

They also took an oath of allegiance to the government and burned a CPP-NPA flag as a symbolic gesture.

In his message during the ceremony, Vinoya promised that the AFP and the local government will provide livelihood and financial assistance to the surrenderees.

“With your surrender, rest assured that we would work hand-in-hand with the local government unit and our government agencies in order to assist you as you start anew and live a peaceful and normal life through livelihood projects and capacity development programs,” he told the surrenderees.

Some of the surrenderees will also be enrolled in the Comprehensive Local Integration Program, spearheaded by the local government to help former guerrillas reintegrate back to mainstream society.
