Posted to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front Website (Jan 8): CBCS to hold consultations – dialogue on preventing extremism with NGO’s, PO leaders of central Mindanao, ARMM, western Mindanao, and Davao Region

The Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society (CBCS) will conduct a Consultation - Dialogue on Promoting Peace, and Preventing Violent Extremism in the Bangsamoro with the Theme: " Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) is the Best Option against Violent Extremism " to be held at Estosan Garden Hotel, Cotabato City from January 9 - 11 , 2018 with funding support from the United Nations Development Programme ( UNDP).

The CBCS is one of the largest umbrella civil society organizations, and peoples’ organizations in Mindanao.

In a special meeting of the GRP - MILF Peace Implementing Panels held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last December 14, 2017 the CBCS had been selected as one of the members of Civilian Protection Component (CPC) of the International Monitoring Team (IMT).

The participants are NGO, and PO leaders of Central Mindanao, and the ARMM comprising of Cotabato City, North Cotabato, South Cotabato, General Santos City, Sultan Kudarat, Lanao Del Norte, and Maguindanao, and Lanao del Sur, respectively, and Davao areas.

Consultations with NGO, and PO leaders of Sulu, Basilan, Tawi - Tawi, Zamboanga City, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Pagadian City are scheduled on January 22 - 24, 2018 at Zamboanga City.

As a background, peace in Mindanao for decades particularly in the Bangsamoro has been intractable in spite of peace negotiations. By the time, peace is almost within reach but something undesirable event happened as the case of MOA - AD in 2008, and the Mamasapano incident in 2015.

Despite the unfortunate crisis, the discourse on the BBL roadmap is not adversely affected. Notwithstanding these state affairs the need to make people understand the importance of BBL as the better alternative in preventing violence to occur. It is safe to say that the BBL is the anti - thesis to violent extremism. The failure to pass an acceptable basic law for the Bangsamoro may usher in a not too good political landscape.

The activity aims to create a regional mechanism that will lobby for the passage pf the BBL as well as to provide alternative narrative for violent extremism.
