NPA rebel killed, 3 soldiers wounded in Zambo clash

From the Mindanao Examiner (Dec 9): NPA rebel killed, 3 soldiers wounded in Zambo clash

A communist insurgent was killed and three army soldiers were injured in fierce clashes in the southern Filipino province of Zamboanga del Sur, a military spokeswoman said Saturday.

Captain Jo-ann Petinglay, of the Western Mindanao Command, said the fighting erupted Friday afternoon in the town called Lakewood where troops tracked down a group of New People’s Army rebels in Gasa village and triggering a gun battle.

She said soldiers had recovered the body of the slain rebel, including assorted rifles and ammunition and an NPA flag. But three soldiers were also wounded in the fighting that lasted over 3 hours. She added that operation is still going on in the province where the rebels had split into several smaller groups to escape from the military offensive.

There was no immediate statement from the NPA on the latest fighting. Rebel forces have stepped up their attacks on government and civilian targets following the collapse of the peace talks with Manila.
