From GMA News Online (Sep 21): Cops kill rebel in Zambo Sibugay clash
A suspected member of a rebel group in Mindanao was killed in an encounter with police forces in Naga town in Zamboanga Sibugay province on Wednesday.
GMA News stringer Ellen Cerbo-Ajijul reported Thursday that members of the Zamboang Sibugay Provincial Public Safety Company responded to a call from a resident of Baragay Mamagon in Naga over sightings of armed men.
Authorities caught up with a group of seven armed men in Sitio Panjang, resulting in a 10-minute firefight that left one of them, identified as Moner Jikiri Timbol, 44, dead.
Initial police information indicated that the armed men belongs to Abdusalam Group, linked to the Abu Sayyaf Group.
Also, police records show that Timbol has a standing warrant of arrest for murder.
Six of the men were able to escape and are now subjects of a manhunt operation, police said.
Recovered from the encounter site were cal.-45 hand gun, live ammunition, and a mobile phone.
