US military drone disrupts Zamboanga airport operations

THREE COMMERCIAL flights at the Zamboanga International Airport (ZIA) were affected Wednesday night as the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) ordered the temporary closure of the runway after a US military drone used for supplying intelligence information to Filipino soldiers lost contact with its operator. Mohammad Naga S. Rascal, ZIA manager, said the closure lasted for about four hours starting at 6 p.m. “We declared for a closure of our runway because of a problem (the missing drone) and for the safety of the flying public,” Mr. Rascal said. The US military drone was recovered about 10 p.m. and the runway was thereafter reopened. The closure delayed the arrival of two flights while one airline canceled the scheduled service to the city that day. — Albert F. Arcilla
