Duterte claims Parojinog among Maute funders in Marawi attack

From GMA News Online (Sep 22): Duterte claims Parojinog among Maute funders in Marawi attack

President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday linked slain Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog to the crisis in Marawi City.

“This is the matrix. That is part of the discovery of the military. Parojinog, the mayor killed by the police during a raid,” he said in a report by Jun Veneracion on GMA News TV's State of the Nation Address.

Duterte made the claim as he showed a piece of paper with Parojinog’s name on it.

He said that aside from Parojinog, politicians in Central Mindanao and drug lords funded the pro-ISIS Maute group's attack on Marawi on May 23.

Duterte previously said that the illegal drug trade funded the Marawi crisis.

The crisis in Marawi City began after authorities tried to serve arrest warrants on members of the Maute Group, which ended up controlling key installations in the city. Later that day, Duterte placed Mindanao under martial law, and government forces remain in battle against the Maute Group.

Parojinog, his wife Susan, his brother Provincial Board Member Octavio, and cousin Daryl were among 16 people killed in an alleged shootout during a predawn raid last July 30.
