General Año’s first mission at DILG: Prevent NPA from getting more firepower

From Update Philippines (May 21): General Año’s first mission at DILG: Prevent NPA from getting more firepower

President Rodrigo Duterte wants stricter measure in selling of guns and ammunition to prevent enemies of the state from getting more firepower. He said that if rules will not be changed rebellion will not end.

This job will be given to incoming Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary, outgoing Armed Forces chief General Eduardo Año. General Año will be at DILG early next month.

“I will no longer allow stores to sell bullets over the counter, that cannot be done,” President Duterte said during the 25th Association of Firearms and Ammunition Dealers of the Philippines (AFAD) Defense and Sporting Arms Show at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City.

He said NPA has money because some miners and plantation owners are really paying ‘revolutionary tax’. “So they have the money. So we have to control. Kung may magpabili ka ng armas, make sure kung sino and I would create an office,” he said.

“May bagong ano man, si DILG Secretary by June will be Año. So doon ko ibigay ang guidance sa kanya na how to check it out that no firearms would ever, ever land in the hands of an enemy of the state,” the President added.

President Duterte told gun dealers to advise their clients that they have to work on the papers to buy bullets and arms and to submit them early to get their orders on time.

High-powered firearms should not be sold to civilians, he stressed, adding security guards should not be allowed to own firearms. He said shotguns for security guard will be good.

“We can do business but let us make sure that it does not fall into the hands of the enemies. Because it could then make it doubly hard for us, instead of investing on the life of one soldier in a fight, if you give them the firepower and the firearms. I would need about five soldiers to suppress one enemy. Mahirap ‘yan,” he told the guns and ammunition dealers.

However, the President encouraged qualified Filipinos to acquire guns to protect their families inside their homes. He said that there are too much firearms in the hands of unauthorized individuals making it difficult to not have a short firearm, at least a 22 pistol.

“If you are qualified, get a gun,” the President said. “It’s better to be prepared. Hindi na masyado sa labas, and problema if you are invaded and there is an invasion in your house, and you have to protect a family.”
