From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 2): PNP to deploy additional forces in Zamboanga del Norte town

SIRAWAI, Zamboanga del Norte –- The Philippine National Police (PNP) through the Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) is deploying additional forces to strengthen the security of this town.

Chief Supt. Billy Beltran, PRO-9 director, made this announcement after Vice Mayor Jaime Felizarta handed over to him on Thursday a Sangguniang Bayan resolution asking for the deployment of additional policemen in this municipality.

Local government officials disclosed that there are only 24 policemen deployed in this town which consists of 34 barangays with 24,583 population as of the 2010 census.

The Sangguniang Bayan adopted the resolution following the series of violent incidents that have recently taken place here, which included the burning of the police station and the killing of two policemen.

The local police headquarters was burned down by unidentified people on Aug. 7 while the two policemen were killed on Aug. 19.

On Tuesday, unidentified person lobbed a grenade at the residence of a policeman. No one was either killed or injured during the incident.

Local police authorities believed the killing of the two policemen and the grenade throwing incident were in retaliation to the death of a suspected drug pusher, who was killed in an anti-drug operation on August 16.

The slain suspect was ranked number six in the drug watch list of the local police authorities.

Beltran said that police outposts will be established in strategic areas to maintain and strengthen the peace and security once additional policemen will be deployed in this municipality.

Beltran visited this municipality on Thursday to personally see the prevailing situation in this town.

Beltran, accompanied by top police officials of this province, inspected the site where the new local police station will be constructed.

He met with police and military officials as well that of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in a closed door meeting and discussed matters on security and the problems on illegal drugs.

He also attended the joint peace and order forum attended by the government officials of this town and that of the nearby municipalities of Sibuco, Siocon and Baliguian.

Representatives of the local commands of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), Ad Hoc Joint Action Group of the MILF (AHJAG-MILF) and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) have also attended the forum.
