The celebratory tour continues for Hidilyn Diaz, the country's first Summer Games medalist in 20 years

Following her silver medal-winning performance during the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil, Hidilyn Diaz, 25, will be honored by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) upon her arrival at the general headquarters on Monday, August 22, according to a press release.
Diaz, an Airwoman First Class, finished second in the 53kg women’s division of the weightlifting event at the Olympics after lifting more than 200kg.
According to the news release, Diaz will be given an Outstanding Achievement Medal and a Plaque of Recognition for her “extraordinary achievement and distinguished service rendered as the first female Filipino athlete to win a silver medal.”
Diaz was also the first Filipino to win a medal at the Summer Olympics since the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games. So far, her incentives have included cash north of P7.5 million and a housing unit from 8990 Holdings Inc - Deca Homes.
“Airwoman First Class Diaz brought national pride which merited public recognition of the highest order for her accomplishment as the coutnry’s lone athlete-delegate to the said international event to win a medal for the Philippines,” it was written in the press release.
Diaz, who had a motorcade in her hometown of Zamboanga City following her triumph, was also given a hero’s welcome by the Philippine Air Force this week during an awarding ceremony at the Villamor Air Base. The weightlifting athlete was additionally promoted to Airwoman Second Class.
“Diaz’s world-class achievement earned recognition for the country. I extend my congratulations to her and to the other soldier-athletes who continue to work hard in their own fields to bring honor and pride to the AFP and to the Filipinos,” AFP Chief of Staff General Ricardo R. Visaya said.
