Trooper awarded after being wounded in poll-related ambush

From the Philippine News Agency (May 19): Trooper awarded after being wounded in poll-related ambush

A trooper of the 20th Infantry Battalion, wounded during the course of election duty in Northern Samar, was awarded the Wounded Personnel Medal (WPM) last Monday.

This was revealed by 8th Infantry Division spokesperson Capt. Ian Andres Fabellon in a statement Thursday.

He identified the wounded soldier as Pfc. Michael P. Cagata.

The latter was formally awarded the WPM by 8th Infantry Division commander Major Gen. Jet B. Velarmino at the Camp Lukban Station Hospital, Catbalogan, Samar.

Cagata was wounded after he and his companions, who were on election-duty, were ambushed by an estimated 30 New People's Army (NPA) rebels at the Cory Aquino Highway, Barangay Anito, Gamay, Northern Samar last week.

The entire military was deputized by the Commission on Elections along with the Philippine National Police to ensure the safe and orderly conduct of the May 9 elections.
