From the Philippine News Agency (May 24): 4 troopers wounded in NPA attack in Sultan Kudarat village

Four soldiers from the peace and development team of the 39th Infantry Battalion were wounded during an unprovoked attack by New People's Army (NPA) bandits in Columbio town, Sultan Kudarat Monday night.

Capt. Danny Boy Tapang, 39th Infantry Battalion civil-military operations officer, said the incident took place at 10:00 p.m. at Sitio Lamalis, Barangay Datal Blao.

He added that an estimated 10 rebels, from the Far South Mindanao Regional Command's Guerrilla Front 72, fired on the troops temporarily deployed in the locality for peace and development work.

In the ensuing two-hour firefight, four soldiers were wounded. The NPA aims to dislodge troopers conducting development activities in the area.

Tapang said that some civilians reported seeing four rebels being carried by their companions during their retreat.

However, this information is still to be verified. Pursuit operations are still ongoing as this posting.
