Newly-appointed Philippine Air Force (PAF) commander Lt.
Gen. Edgar Fallorina on Wednesday said there is a need for the country's air
arm to retool itself for so-called "asymmetric challenges".
The latter is generally defined as conflict between a
standing, professional army and an insurgency or resistance movement.
"Today, we must retool for asymmetric challenges, where
before we use to use our force at any cause. Today, we must relearn to fly and
fight so that we won't unnecessarily use our force," Fallorina stressed.
"Our security environment has unravelled in ways we
never imagined before, long used to divisions among the threat groups in our
country, today we are seeing fusions, and affiliations and the blurring of
lines, long familiar with what lies within our national territory as part of
our heritage and our sovereign rights and entitlements," the
newly-appointed PAF chief pointed out.
Given these challenges, Fallorina said there is an urgent
need to maintain pressure of the PAF's five modernization pillars to ensure its
transformation.
"We’ll find its manifestation vis-a-vis the challenges
we face. The manifestation has to be in our solidarity with the Armed Forces of
the Philippine and in our developing capabilities to add to the strength of the
Armed Forces particularly as altogether we face overwhelming odds this
year," he added.
