A Philippine Army sargeant died on the spot while his
companion-member of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit was seriously
wounded in an ambush staged by New People's Army (NPA) rebels while the two
were on board a motorcycle at Barangay San Isidro, Libmanan, Camarines Sur at
10:20 a.m. Wednesday.
A police report identified the fatality as Sgt. Rodel Rala,
married, and the wounded CAFGU member as Jovito Arias, married, who was rushed
to a hospital in Libmanan.
Both belong to the 22nd Infantry Battalion of the Philippine
Army.
The government troopers were bound for Barangay Pag-Oring,
Libmanan when ambushed by an undetermined number of rebels positioned at both
sides of the road.
Responding government soldiers failed to catch up with the
communist dissidents who withdrew towards an unknown direction.
