Two suspected New People's Army (NPA) extortionists were nabbed during joint military-police operations in the town of Mauban in Quezon on Tuesday.

Lt. Col. Angelo Guzman, Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) spokesperson, said the arrest took place at Barangay Cagsiay 2, Mauban.

The operation was conducted by troopers of the 85th Infantry Battalion and the PNP Quezon Public Safety Company.

201st Infantry Brigade commander Brig. Gen. Rhoderick M. Parayno identified the two suspects as Alex Perdiguera and Mark Ryan Relao Asores.

A .45 caliber pistol was also seized in their possession was recovered during the arrest.

Perdiguera is a resident is a resident of Ibabang Pulo, Pagbilao, Quezon while Asores is from Barangay San Jose, San Pablo, Laguna.

The suspects were positively identified by construction workers as the ones who burned a backhoe in November 2015 when the construction company did not give in to their extortion demand.

"The NPAs sent extortion letters again to contractors and businessmen but this time they were asking a higher fees," Parayno said.

This prompted them to report the matter to the 201st Infantry Brigade.

With the cooperation and information coming from various contractors, businessmen and the locals in the area, the 201st Infantry Brigade with the PNP-Quezon Public Safety Company launched an operation targeting the NPA extortion group which led to the arrest of the two NPAs.

"These (extortion and arson) are oppressive acts of the NPA against the people. Apart from disturbing the peace and affecting development efforts in the countryside," Parayno said.
