The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday celebrated
its 25th Founding Anniversary and commemorated the heroism of 44 members of
Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) who died in
Mamasapano, Maguindanao encounter on Jan. 25, 2015.
”One year ago today, made the supreme sacrifice for God, for
our country and for our countrymen. A story of exceptional dedication to duty,
supreme and selfless service, and unqualified love of country amidst
insurmountable obstacles. And while nothing may adequately assuage the intense
sorrow and loss in the hearts of the families, the loved ones, the friends and
the comrades of our gallant SAF troopers, may these medals, which will be
presented today serve not only as an affirmation of their heroism but also as
an eternal expression of the PNP’s, and the Filipino people’s highest esteem,
deep admiration, sincerest gratitude and profound respect for the bravery,
courage and gallantry that they have displayed in service to the nation and in
genuine sacrifice, both for themselves and their loved ones, for the betterment
of the common good,” PNP Chief Director General Ricardo Marquez said in his
opening remarks during the celebration of the PNP’s 25th Founding Anniversary
held Monday at PNP Headquarter in Camp Crame, Quezon City.
On Jan. 29, 1991, the PNP was established by virtue of RA
6975 following the retirement, as mandated by law, of its forerunner
organizations, the Philippine Constabulary and the Integrated National Police.
Marquez said this day was to remind each and everyone of the
true meaning and the sacrifice it entailed "to serve and protect with the
vision of every soul silenced and thus even more hearts inconsolably broken
behind our eyes everyday for every difficult task assigned, for every morning
difficult to rise to and for every dangerous criminal waiting to be put behind
bars."
”This celebration is also an opportunity for us to renew our
commitment to service and to the Filipino people. And there can be no better
way to do this than by continuing to win our streets and communities from crime
and lawlessness and removing the fear from the hearts of our countrymen,” he
said.
Meanwhile, Mel Senen S. Sarmiento, Interior and Local
Government Secretary and Chairman of National Police Commission, led the Wreath
Laying Ceremony at the Bantayog ng Mga Bayaning Tagapamayapa.
In an interview Sarmiento emphasized the importance of the
celebration in giving honor to the soldiers and policemen who died in service
to the Philippines .
”We have so many soldiers and policemen who sacrificed their
lives in the service of our country. The founding anniversary is a way of
honoring our police officers who offered their lives not only during the
Mamasapano incident last year but also to those who offered their lives and
services for the past 25 years just to protect the people.
In relation, Sarmiento also begged the people not to take
politics into the commemoration.
“I hope that we should not forget the service that our
officers had offered and take advantage of the incidence for some personal
motives. Let us respect them,” he said.
Sarmiento told the PNP to show the public that they are the
real Cardo Dalisay, a character playing a police officer in TV show "Ang
Probinsyano"
"Suklian natin ang pagpapahalaga nila sa atin sa
pamamagitan ng pagpaparamdam sa kanila na kakampi nila tayo. Ipakita natin na
tayo ang mga Cardo Dalisay sa totoong buhay. Mga naka-unipormeng tapat sa
tungkulin", Sarmiento said during the 25th PNP Founding Anniversary.
Sarmiento shared how the country's police force has evolved
throughout the years and how the public now reveres the uniform.
"From being feared of being combatants, the police now
are viewed as nation-builders. With climate change, the PNP are even the first
responders who risk their lives to help others", Sarmiento added.
The Secretary also stressed the continued support of the
Aquino administration in modernizing the PNP.
