From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 25): 5 killed in an encounter with lawmen in Nueva Ecija

SCIENCE CITY OF MUNOZ, Nueva Ecija -- Five people were killed in an encounter with lawmen in a Philippine National Police-Commission on Elections (PNP-Comelec) checkpoint in Barangay Sapang Cauayan here at about 3 a.m. Monday.

Senior Supt. Manuel Cornel, Nueva Ecija police director, said police have yet to establish the identities of the fatalities.

Cornel said 15 personnel from the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) and the local police led by Supt. Ponciano Zafra were conducting checkpoint when they noticed a speeding tricycle.

When flagged down for inspection, Cornel said “they even increased their speed and hit the Comelec checkpoint signage and fired upon the police officers manning the checkpoint.”

All five of the suspects were killed during the exchange of fire, he said.

No one was hurt on the part of the lawmen even as the police patrol was hit by bullet from the suspects.

Investigators have yet to recover the unspecified caliber of handgun used by the suspects.
