2 killed, 6 hurt Sibugay police raid

From Tempo (Dec 10): 2 killed, 6 hurt Sibugay police raid

Police killed two suspected members of a local criminal syndicate in a raid on their lair in Talusan town of Zamboanga Sibugay.

Chief Supt. Wilben Mayor, spokesman of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the clash also resulted in the wounding of six others, including a policeman and two minors who were caught in the crossfire.
He identified the slain suspects as Edris Mohammad and Basilisa Llanos who were the subject of the search warrant issued by a local court over intelligence reports of the existence of a cache of firearms.

Another suspect identified as Noel Llanos was collared during the operation.

“This is part of the One-Time, Big-Time operations which we have been implementing against criminal syndicates across the country,” said Mayor.

The officials said the slain and arrested suspects are members of a local criminal gang involved in various criminal activities in Zamboanga Sibugay.

The province, police intelligence reports, is home to various criminal gangs that include robbery and extortion syndicates, gun-running gangs and even groups that are connected with the Abu Sayyaf Group.

Seized during the operation were an AK-47 and M4 assault rifles, and a .45 pistol.

During the operation which occurred in Barangay Poblacion at dawn on Tuesday, Mayor said a policeman identified as PO2 Noriel Laureta was wounded.

The civilians wounded during the clash, according to Mayor, were taken to the nearby hospital for treatment.

Laureta, on the other hand, was taken to a hospital in Zamboanga City.

Police have intensified the operation against armed groups as part of the initial preparations for election security next year.
