Local officials, PNP convince NPAs to abandon armed struggle, live normal lives

From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 2): Local officials, PNP convince NPAs to abandon armed struggle, live normal lives

Police and local officials in Colombio, Sultan Kudarat have successfully convinced communist guerrillas to abandon armed struggle and live normal lives, officials said today.

Naila Mamalinta, chairperson of Barangay Datal Blao, said in a phone interview, that the five New Peoples’ Army (NPA) guerrillas first sought her help “because they have been tired of armed struggle and wanted to live normal lives.”

”When I saw and felt their sincerity, I recommended them to the local police,” Mamalinta said, adding she coordinated with Senior Inspector Bernard Francia, Colombio police chief.

Francia identified the returnees as Filo Capion, a team leader, and his four followers Jomar Capion, Rom Capion, Jomar Laguayan, and Ricky Wata. They were all members of the Indigenous Peoples community called B’laan in the farming Sitio of Bong-Mal, Barangay Datal-Blao.

The rebels officially surrendered to the PNP regional intelligence division Friday.

The Blaan fighters brought with them fatigue uniform, backpacks, combat boots but no firearms since they decided to sneaked out of the hinterlands of Colombio to seek help from village officials.

They told police that their leaders will execute those who would desire to abandon the movement to live normal lives.
