Tribal warrior, worker slain

From Tempo (Oct 6): Tribal warrior, worker slain

A tribal warrior called “Bahani” was killed in an ambush staged by unidentified gunmen in a remote town in Magpet, North Cotabato, Sunday.

Senior Inspector Felix Fornan, chief of Magpet Police, identified the victim as Joel Bia-ong, also known in his area as, “Datu Bahani” or a tribal warrior.

Fornan said Bia-ong was on his way to nearby M’lang town onboard his motorcycle when waylaid by armed men at Sitio Lacuacon, Barangay Tagbak in Magpet.

Authorities hinted the New Peoples’ Army (NPA) was behind Bia-ong’s murder.

The NPA had already declared war against “Bahani” or tribal warriors on suspicion that they were used by the Philippine Army in their campaign against communist insurgency.

In nearby Tulunan town, also in North Cotabato, a security guard of a banana plantation identified as Macario Porras Gadnana, 48, was found dead, around 6 a.m., also on Sunday.

Gadnana sustained gunshot wounds in the chest.

The victim’s body was discovered inside the motor pool of Delinanas Banana Plantation in Barangay Tambak, Tulunan.

Inspector Rolando Dillera, chief of Tulunan Police, said Gadnana was killed after a heated argument with a banana plantation worker who is now the subject of their manhunt.
