AUTHORITIES arrested on Saturday afternoon two suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) in an entrapment operation in Panabo City.
Troops belonging to the Army's 69th Infantry Battalion (IB) and members of the Panabo City police arrested the two NPA rebels around 1 p.m. at Tibulao Terminal in Barangay New Pandan, Panabo City.
In a statement issued by the 10th Infantry Division (ID), the suspects were identified as Gary Francisco Bayoang, 25, and a resident of Lower Pandaitan in Paquibato District, Davao City, and Daniel Francisco Bayoang, 19, of Purok 3, Barangay New Visayas, Panabo City.
Army said the two were allegedly extorting some P20,000, three sacks of rice, medicines, and three units of .45 caliber pistol from their victim whose identity was withheld for security reason.
Major General Rafael Valencia, commander of the 10th Infantry Division (ID), commended the efforts of both the Army and the PNP to pre-empt extortion attempts of the NPA rebels.
"We cannot allow these extortionists to demand money or goods from people. The Army and PNP will continue to work closely in addressing the different security threats that continue to affect the public. As of now, Panabo PNP are now trying to determine what charges the two NPA rebels should face," Valencia said in his statement.
