As the nation makes its first observance of the “Armed
Forces of the Filipino People Week” under Republic Act No. 10644 this month,
Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief-of-staff Hernando DCA Iriberri
called on Filipino soldiers on Monday to renew their commitment to the values
of the AFP.
“Let us renew our commitment to the values of honor, service
and patriotism,” he stressed.
Iriberri also reminded every soldier, airman and sailor of
the AFP to remember the courageous sacrifices of all members of the AFP, past
and present, to inspire them to fulfill their duty to the Filipino people.
“For the first time in our history as an institution and in
the history of our nation…we highlight the role of officers and personnel of
the Armed Forces of the Philippines
in the accomplishment of our nation’s goals through the years,” he said.
By virtue of R.A. 10664, otherwise known as “An Act
Declaring the Last Full Week of August as Armed Forces of the Filipino People
Week,” the last week of August will be spent in the observance of “Armed Forces
of the Filipino People Week” starting this year.
Iriberri said the declaration should give every AFP member
“more reason to do the best, be the best on the frontline, in the community and
every instance of our service.”
The law was approved by President Benigno S. Aquino III last
July 6 “to give due recognition to the important role and contribution of past
and present Filipino Military Officers and personnel.”
Under this law, the Department of National Defense is
mandated to urge all citizens to recognize the event and by holding programs
and activities in its observance.
