The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has put an elite security force on alert amid a series of bombing incidents and the increasing threat of terrorism both in the Philippines and abroad.

The MIAA has created a Special Reaction Unit (SRU) of the airport police department in compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) requirement that every airport in the world with domestic and international operations must create and train its own security.

The SRU was trailed locally at a training facility of the Philippine Air Force in Pampanga, where they went through rigid physical and physiological exercises.

The members of the elite SRU are also expert marksmen in both automatic rifles and handguns, and can take down aggressors in the aircraft, or at the airport terminal. They are equipped with stun guns for aggressors who need to be disabled immediately.

Each member of the SRU wears a bullet proof vest, a Kevlar helmet, and eye wear protection. They also specialize in close quarter combat.

The SRU is planning to purchase its own drone or unmanned aerial vehicle, which it intends to use in airport surveillance during response situations.

The MIAA has provided them with radio communication and vehicles for quick response during emergency cases.
