Army overruns rebel camp in Misamis Oriental

From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 12): Army overruns rebel camp in Misamis Oriental

The military recovered ammunition, firearms, solar panel, mobile phones and subversive documents in a communist guerrilla camp in Misamis Oriental after a gun battle Wednesday.

Capt. Patrick Martinez, spokesperson of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, said that a combat patrol of the 58th Infantry Battalion encountered about 30 heavily armed New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the outskirts of Claveria, Misamis Oriental, Wednesday morning.

He said the government troops did not suffer casualty, but civilian witnesses told pursuing troopers that the withdrawing rebels were carrying their wounded and dead comrades.

Martinez said that the government troopers overrun the mini-camp in the outskirts of Ilaja in the village of Aposkahoy in Claveria, Misamis Oriental after a more than an hour of firefight before the rebels withdrew to various directions.

Recovered from the rebel camp was an M16 rifle, a Carbine rifle, a landmine with 14 blasting caps and wires, a solar panel, 2 cellular phones, 2 memory cards with subversive contents, 2 ICOM radios, 20 backpacks with subversive documents and personal belongings, one linked ammunition of K3 machine gun, and a voter's Identification Card whose identity is now the subject of verification.

Martinez said that the encounter in Claveria, Misamis Oriental is the second armed hostility between the government troops and the NPA rebels since the abduction of an Army soldier in a firefight in the outskirts of Gingoog City last month.
