From the Visayan Daily Star (Mar 21): NPA camp seized in san Carlos
Army soldiers and SAF commandos exhibit the CPP-NPA flag and other items left behind by fleeing NPA rebels at the camp they abandoned in Brgy. Codcod, San Carlos City.
A team of Philippine Army soldiers and Police Special Action Force commandos seized an encampment of the New People’s Army, after an encounter with about 30 armed rebels Wednesday in Sitio Natuyay, Brgy. Codcod, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.
Lt. Col. Rommel Cordova, 62nd Infantry Battalion commander, said yesterday that they recovered another homemade shotgun from the rebel camp, bringing to seven the firearms they have recovered at the encounter site.
The running gunbattle Wednesday also led to the capture of two alleged rebels, who have already been charged before the San Carlos City Prosecutor’s Office for illegal possession of firearms, Cordova added.
The rebel camp can accommodate about 40 individuals, who left behind an ICOM radio, ponchos, combat boots, kitchen utensils, subversive documents, CPP-NPA flag, assorted foodstuff and personal belongings, he also said.
The 62IB, in tandem with 6th Special Action Battalion and NOPPO Public Safety Company, have been conducting security operations since last week in the hinterlands of Escalante City and Toboso, as the NPA is set to mark its 46th founding anniversary on March 29.
Cordova said the discovery of the NPA camp, believed to be occupied by the Northern Negros Front headed by a certain Ka Reboy, will surely deprive the NPA of a place to train, consolidate and equip their remaining forces.
He also acknowledged the vigilance and efforts of the civilian populace who provided them the timely information.
“The people in the community have been telling the troops about having enough of the NPA,” Cordova said.
Maj. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero, 3rd Infantry Division commander, in a statement he issued yesterday, lauded the efforts of 62IB and the PNP Special Action Force in maintaining the peaceful environment in San Carlos City.
