Firefight erupts anew in Agusan

From the Manila Bulletin (Mar 18): Firefight erupts anew in Agusan

The skirmishes between government security forces and communist insurgents continued in some parts of Mindanao as a fierce gunbattle erupted anew in the hinterland sitio of Cagumay, Barangay Sta. Cruz, in Rosario town, Agusan del Sur province, a regional police spokesman yesterday said.

Supt. Martin M. Gamba, spokesman of Police Regional Office 13 (PRO 13), said the encounter killed a suspected member of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) and wounded an undetermined number of other rebels.

He said the encountered rebels were members of guerilla-Front Committee 14 of the CPP-NPA Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NMRC) under the command of certain “Susay”.

He said the gun-battle took place while elements of 75th Infantry Battalion (75th IB) were conducting a security patrol in Cagumay area.

The firefight lasted for about 20 minutes after which the NPAs withdrew towards the mountainous area of Rosario town, he said.

One government soldier was wounded in the encounter and was immediately brought to nearby hospital in that same province for medical treatment, he said.

“Operating troops seized in the encounter site some bomb-making materials, including blasting caps, and several fired cartridge cases,” Gamba said.

With the series of gunbattles in some parts in Caraga region, PRO 13 Regional Director Chief Supt. David Y. Ombao ordered yesterday all field units to intensify their security measures in preparation for any atrocities that could be launched in connection with the 46th founding anniversary of the NPA on March 29, 2015.
