Zamboanga police, folk told: Help deny terrorists safe haven

From GMA News (Feb 8): Zamboanga police, folk told: Help deny terrorists safe haven

Police and residents in Zamboanga City were urged to help each other in denying terrorists a safe haven there after a suspected terrorist attack on Jan. 23 that killed two people and wounded more than 50.

Mayor Isabelle Climaco-Salazar also said the long arm of the law will catch the perpetrators of the Jan. 23 blast.

“Deploy our barangay tanod and create neighborhood watch groups,” she advised barangay officials, according to a Facebook post by the city government last Wednesday.

But she also said the increased security should be a “part of our way of life as a community” and not just when there are threats.

The mayor promised to "do everything within my power and authority, to suppress all acts of terror."

Earlier, the mayor said the Abu Sayyaf may have been behind the Jan. 23 blast, which happened near a bus station.

She said that while they want to bring justice for Reynaldo Tan and Dennis Valente, who died in the Jan. 23 blast, "our security forces cannot do (this) alone.”

She said denying terrorists a safe haven in the city and thwarting criminality and lawlessness are shared responsibilities.

The mayor urged residents to cooperate with the authorities, and to stay vigilant against suspicious people and items in their area. She also asked them to coordinate with the authorities to stop further bloodshed, loss of lives and property.
