Two ranking NPA leaders nabbed in Davao Del Sur

From the Philippine News Agency (Feb 7): Two ranking NPA leaders nabbed in Davao Del Sur

Troopers from the Compostela Valley-based 10th Infantry Division, together with their police and intelligence counterparts, have successfully arrested two ranking New People's Army (NPA) leaders during operations at Barangay Sinaragan, Matanao town, Davao Del Sur Friday afternoon.

Major Gen. Eduardo Ano, 10th Infantry Division commander, identified the arrested rebels as Raunil Mortejo, a ranking leader of the NPA's Southern Mindanao Regional Committee and Jasmin Badilla, head of SMRC's medical staff.

Mortejo was arrested at 3:30 p.m.by the virtue of the warrant of arrest issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 11, Nabunturan for kidnapping and serious illegal detention.

While Badilla has an outstanding arrest warrant, also issued by the same court, for robbery with violence against or intimidation of persons.

Ano said the two were considered a "party couple".

Seized from their possession were an IED (improvised explosive device); an M-33 fragmentation grenade; and a .45 caliber pistol loaded with seven bullets.

"Arrested personalities were turned over to Municipal Police Station of Matanao for proper legal disposition," Ano said.

He also said that the capture of Mortejo and Badilla was a major blow to the NPA leadership in the Davao Region as these two were high-value cadres, which are difficult for the communist movement to train and replace.

"We all urge the members of NPAs who are just deceived by their leaders to surrender and embrace a peaceful life. Being in the lawless armed group, you can not go into hiding forever. Eventually, the long arms of the law will catch up on you," Ano said.
