Troopers from the Cagayan De Oro-based 4th Infantry Division
have shot and killed a New People's Army (NPA) fighter following an encounter
in Sitio Mabong, Barangay Caromata, San Miguel town, Surigao Del Sur on Feb.

Reports forwarded by Major Christian Uy, 4th Infantry
Division spokesperson, Friday said the 15-minute firefight started 2:10 p.m.
when government security troops encountered an undetermined number of rebels
while on security patrol.
In the exchange of gunfire, one NPA was killed while an undetermined
number were wounded, prompting the rebels to retreat.
No casualties were reported on the government side, Uy said.
Recovered were an AK-47 automatic rifle and a bandoleer.
He added that this is their third encounter with the NPAs
this week.
The first clash happened on Feb. 23 at about 12:15 p.m.
where troops of 26th Infantry Battalion led by 2nd Lt. Bryan O. Villena at
Barangay Padiay, Sibagat town, Agusan Del Sur.
The exchange of gunfire between the rebels and soldiers
lasted for 10 minutes, prompting the NPAs to abandon theirmakeshift camp and
some AK-47 bullets.
Another encounter took place at 3: 10 p.m., the same day, as
troopers from the 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion under Capt. Romeo Ferdinand N.
Baustista fought with an estimated 30 rebels also in Barangay Padiay.
The exchange of gunfire lasted for about 40 minutes after
which the NPAs abandoned their camp and fled the area.
Troops were able to recover four anti-personnel improvised
explosive devices (IEDs) and other war paraphernalia.
The NPA camp can accommodate about 50 persons.
