CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The local police command here on Thursday has raised an alert following the government’s declaration of war against the Moro rebels of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in Central Mindanao.

Pol. Supt. Lemuuel Gonda, chief operation officer of the local police command, said that the police is adopting a preemptive measure for fear that the war between the Moro rebels and the government troopers would escalate here.

He said that aside from mobile checkpoints, the local police has also set up checkpoints in various areas in the city. “We have also enlisted the assistance of the local barangay units to be on alert in their respective barangays here,” Gonda said.

Earlier, the military has also clamp the boundaries in Northern Mindanao to make sure that the fighting in Central Mindanao will not escalate toward the region.

Maj. Christian Uy, spokesperson of the army’s 4th Infantry Division here, said that the military is closely coordinating with other law enforcers in various provinces and cities in Northern Mindanao in securing the region.

The BIFF, headed by Umbra Kato, is a breakaway group of the Moro Islamic Liberation (MILF) whose fighters also engaged in the Mamapasano encounter in Maguindanao, which resulted in the death of 44 members of the elite Special Action Force (SAF).
