5 troopers killed, 6 wounded in Ilocos Sur ambush

From the Philippine News Agency (Feb 27): 5 troopers killed, 6 wounded in Ilocos Sur ambush

Five troopers from the Army's 81st Infantry Battalion were killed and six others wounded after being ambushed by lawless elements in Barangay Legleg, Quirino town, Ilocos Sur Thursday night.

The incident took place 7 p.m., 7th Infantry Division spokesperson Capt. Mark Anthony Ruelos, said in a message to the PNA.

He added that troopers, along with their police counterparts, were headed back to their headquarters,after conducting law enforcement operations, when ambushed by an estimated 30 gunmen.

The soldiers were aboard a KM-450 truck when fired upon.

Five troopers were immediately killed in the firefight while another six were wounded.

Ruelos said that all of the slain troopers were enlisted personnel.

Pursuit operations are now ongoing.
