Eastern Mindanao Command lauds military, police units for successful defense of Mati City Police Station

From the Philippine News Agency (Feb 16): Eastern Mindanao Command lauds military, police units for successful defense of Mati City Police Station

The Eastern Mindanao Command lauded on Monday military and police forces for their successful efforts in foiling the New People's Army (NPA) attack against the Mati City Police Station in Davao Oriental Sunday night.

"The repulse of the attack was attributed to the good joint contingency plans, timely intelligence, alertness of the police manning the station and the prompt response of our troops from the 701st Infantry Brigade," Eastern Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Aurelio Baladad said.

The botched rebel assault took place at 7: 30 p.m. It was defeated after duty police officers stood their ground until the timely arrival of 701st Infantry Brigade reinforcement.

In the resulting gun battle, a police officer was wounded while an NPA fighter was killed.

Baladad slammed the continuous disregard of the rebels of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Respect of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHIHL).

"While we grieve for our casualties brought about by the continuous blatant violation of CARHIHL by the NPAs by using landmines and targeting also non-military persons. This will not stop us from pursuing them and preventing their anti-people atrocities." Baladad said.

The Eastern Mindanao Command chief said that the attack was meant to embarrass the government since Davao Oriental has been declared as “insurgency free” in 2013.

"They gathered NPAs from other provinces to attack and disrupt the already peaceful lives of the people of Davao Oriental," he added.

The attacking bandits utilized one elf truck (RJW-626), two vans and five motorcycles during the attack.

At about 8 p.m., pursuing troops of 104th Division Reconnaissance Company was hit by a landmine at Sitio Magay, Martin Marundan, Mati City, Davao Oriental killing two Army soldiers identified as Pfc. Daniel Damansila Jr and Pvt. Ryan M. Amigo and wounding five others, namely Pfc. Virgil Logronio, Pfc. Emerito Castillo, Pfc. Wil Christian Resuelo, Pfc. Zaldy Canonero and Pfc. Ian Mark Babiera.

Resuelo later expired in the hospital.

In a related incident, a civilian clad and unarmed Sgt. Adel Lucanan of 67th Infantry Battalion was shot dead by the rebels while passing along Saint Camillus Hospital, Mati City.
