From ABS-CBN (Feb 16): Convoy of Davao police chief attacked

The convoy of the Davao regional police chief was ambushed in Barangay Badas, Mati City in Davao Oriental Monday morning but no one was hurt in the incident.

The ambush happened hours after authorities and suspected communist rebels engaged twice in Mati City.

On Sunday night, around 50 armed men opened fire at the police station in Mati City, prompting policemen to fire back, killing one rebel.

Soldiers later arrived to reinforce the police and pursue the suspected rebels.

Three soldiers ended up dead while five others were wounded.

PNP spokesperson Chief Supt. Generoso Cerbo Jr. said the attack on the Mati City police station was sensed early on by policemen.

"They senses the attack so this led to the engagement between the PNP and the lawless armed groups. A firefight ensued, lasting I think for around 15-20 minutes," he said.

"On the part of the NPA, they withdrew upon seeing that they lost the element of surprise."
