While stressing that it is still to receive any formal
request from the Philippine National Police (PNP) regarding any assistance in
the extrication of the fallen and wounded Special Action Force (SAF) members,
Army commander Lt. Gen. Hernando DCA Iriberri on Monday said that they will
provide the necessary aid if called upon.
In the same vein, he also called the incident at Mamasapano,
Maguindanao where around 30 SAF members were killed in a fierce battle with
members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom
Fighters Sunday, a "tragic incident" and expressed his condolences to
the families of the fallen police officers.
Initial reports said that six MILF fighters were killed
while around three to five BIFF were neutralized in the long encounter.
Irriberri also said the decision to reinforce or provide
additional troops to Maguindanao depends on the decision of the Armed Forces of
the Philippines
higher leadership.
And when queried on whether the 6th Infantry Division, the
unit deployed in Maguindanao, will be placed on alert in wake of the incident,
he said that this is also the purview of higher military leadership.
