Tiamzon couple refuses to enter plea

From Tempo (Dec 3): Tiamzon couple refuses to enter plea

The Tiamzon couple, alleged leaders of the Community Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) and five others refused to enter a plea during their arraignment for illegal possession of firearms and explosives Monday afternoon.

Benito Tiamzon, alleged CPP-NPA chairman, and wife Wilma, the alleged secretary-general, who were arrested in Cebu last March, instead questioned the cases filed against them.

Five others – Joel Enano, Arlene Panea and Rex Villaflor, all detained in Camp Crame; and Nona “Lorraine” Castillo and Jeosi Nepa – also did not enter any plea, prompting Regional Trial Court Judge Ruben Altubar to instead enter a “not guilty” plea for them, said defense lawyer Rachel Pastores.

The Tiamzon couple questioned the order of the court, the validity of the inquest proceedings, and their warrantless arrest and search. The alleged rebel leaders claimed that the authorities “planted” the evidences against them.

Pastores, meanwhile, described as overkill the means of transporting and securing her clients from Camp Crame in Manila to the Mactan-Benito Ebuen Air Base in Cebu.

The couple was brought to Cebu onboard a Fokker Plane and then transported to Toledo City via a helicopter.

Over 100 policemen and 50 government soldiers were waiting for the arrival of the couple in Toledo City for the arraignment.
