Captain Joan Petinglay, speaking for the Army’s 6th Infantry
Division, said the reports on websites of at least two national news outfits
and several local media outlets were baseless.
”What we learned from our units in Shariff Aguak and our
intelligence operatives based in the municipality was that there was a series
of loud firecracker blasts in the morning of Monday there, but no bombing
incident whatsoever,” Petinglay told reporters.
Quoting a report from Army’s mechanized units in Shariff
Aguak and nearby towns, Petinglay said the report was apparently based on text
messages to a local radio station who announced it on air and picked up by
reporters of national dailies without verifying its veracity.
Petinglay said the firecracker explosions did not cause
panic among local residents either.
Petinglay also said situation in Shariff Aguak has been
normal despite threats of harassments by the brigand Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom
Fighters (BIFF).
Since Monday, soldiers have been placed on heightened alert
ahead of the New Year’s revelry.
