WESTERN Mindanao Command (Westmincom) Chief Lieutenant General Rustico Guerrero led the opening of the two-day “Football for Peace” tournament in Zamboanga City on Saturday.

Guerrero led the ceremonial kick-off of the football tournament, which is being held at the football field of the Edwin Andrews Air Base (EAAB) in this city.

Guerrero said the tournament, which ends Sunday, is being held in line with the observance of the Peace Month.

The tournament is aimed to promote character and skill development among children; and grant scholarships to qualified participants.

The participants include students aged eight to 18 from this city and Cagayan de Oro City and from the provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

The tournament is being held in collaboration with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process and Zamboanga Football Associations (Zafa), Marine Battalion Landing Team-Davao Region (MBLT-11) and Westmincom.

The holding of the “Football for Peace” tournament is the second time.
The first tournament was held on April 21, 2012 by the Philippine Marine Corps at the Bonifacio Naval Station Parade Ground.

The tournament received positive feedback from local communities.
