Moro Islamic Liberation Front's (MILF) National Guard Front Commander Saya, four of his followers, and other John Does were charged with double murder for the killing of a commander of the 106th Base and his son in Sultan sa Barongis town last week.
Commander Bato and his son Sadam Kamad, the barangay chairman of Tugal, were on board their motorcycle when they were gunned down by the suspects in a far-flung village in the same municipality.
The shooting incident led to a short firefight between the two warring groups.
The victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds from high-powered firearms. Their hands were almost amputated, police said.
Sultan sa Barongis Police Chief Inspector Cesar Ibal said they have identified five suspects based on the testimonies of witnesses who were just three meters away from the crime scene.
Meanwhile, the local government on Tuesday called for a peace and order council meeting.
Authorities said over a thousand families have already left their homes due to fear of getting caught in between the fighting.
"Naririnig kasi nila na may reinforcement daw at ganun din ang gagawin ng kabilang grupo. So kung magsalubong itong dalawa, siguradong magkakaroon ng barilan," Ibal said.
But MILF Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces spokesman Von Al Haq said a directive has been sent to the ground commanders not to make any movement and reinforcement on the warring parties to avoid more tension between the two.
The MILF is also doing an investigation to find out the root cause of the killing of Commander Bato.
The MILF said it will leave to its disciplinary board the decision on what sanctions will be imposed on whoever will be found guilty in the crime.
Due to the tension, classes in two elementary schools were suspended. The local government and the Department of Education then decided to hold classes in nearby evacuation centers where the residents are temporarily staying.
