KMP urges release of ‘farmer activist’

From the Visayan Daily Star (Aug 22): KMP urges release of ‘farmer activist’

The Kilusang Magbubukid sa Pilipinas-Negros chapter yesterday called for the immediate dismissal of what they described as trumped-up cases against Abraham Villanueva, an organizer and farmer activist, saying that he was apprehended without an arrest warrant.

KMP-Negros secretary general Felipe Gelle claimed that the arson charges against Villanueva were among the fabricated charges also filed against Romulo Bitoon and Rogina Quilop.

Gelle said Villanueva was also arrested in 2005 in Kabankalan City, with six other KMP leaders for alleged illegal possession of firearms.

Villanueva, with the aliases of Tikboy and Gamay, has been tagged by the military and police as the secretary of the South West Front of the Komiteng Rehiyonal-Negros, in southern Negros.

He has a pending arrest warrant for violation of Section 3, Paragraph 4 of Presidential Decree 1613, or arson, issued by San Carlos Regional Trial Court Judge Kathrine Go, who denied him bail.

Gelle said they will launch a protest action to call for the immediate release of Villanueva and 28 others in Negros whom he called “political detainees.”

  1. This is Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) front group activity. The Kilusang Magbubukid sa Pilipinas (KMP- Peasant Movement of the Philippines) is the main CPP peasant front with chapters active throughout the Philippines. KMP is also a founding member of the main CPP multisectoral umbrella front organization Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN-New Patriotic Alliance).
