A loud explosion alarmed residents of Zone 5 Barangay Tamontaka in Datu Odin Sinsuat town, Maguindanao around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Three persons on board a motorcycle allegedly threw a PRB423 fragmentation grenade toward the dark portion of the back wall of the Lourdes Grotto Church, said Datu Odin Sinsuat chief of police PIns Datulon Pinguiaman.

While no one was hurt in the explosion, it struck fear and worry among the residents near the site.

The perpetrators allegedly came from the Datu Odin area and were moving toward the Cotabato City area, Pingulaman added.

He strongly believes that the perpetrators were also afraid, that’s why the grenade was lobbed at an isolated part of the church.

Checkpoints have been set up in entry and exit points to the city due to an earlier explosion of a home-made bomb in City Plaza which injured several people, including a soldier.

In a related development, a bomb also exploded in Barangay Saguing, Makilala, North Cotabato in the wee morning of Friday.

Again, no one was injured in this explosion, although a steel shop owned by Ernesto Panes was destroyed.

Investigation into the two explosions continues.
