AFP officers, men renew commitment to IHL

From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 11): AFP officers, men renew commitment to IHL

Officers and enlisted personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reiterated their commitment toward the promotion of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) on Monday morning.

This took place during flag-raising ceremony at the AFP General Headquarters canopy area in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

AFP public affairs office chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said the recitation of the pledge of commitment reaffirms the obligation and adherence of the military to IHL.

The activity was in line with the celebration of the IHL month and was simultaneously replicated by military headquarters and field units nationwide.

Department of National Defense Secretary Voltaire T. Gazmin and AFP chief-of- staff Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang were Monday’s guests of honor.

“We should execute our duties and responsibilities to protect our citizens caught in the midst of armed conflict in the country, and guarantee total respect for their human rights as prescribed by IHL," Gazmin said.

Catapang, on the other hand, said “Peace can only be truly just and lasting if it is based on respect for life, human rights, and dignity.”

He also stressed that the AFP is committed to ensure that its operations and procedures are anchored on the imperative to protect the populace, especially those who are not parties to the conflict.

With the theme, “Empowering the Vulnerable in Times of Armed Conflict,” the celebration enjoins all partner agencies, including DND, AFP, the Philippine Red Cross, Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process and Commission on Human Rights to celebrate the month through simple and appropriate activities.

On Tuesday, there will be a photo exhibit at the DND building lobby.

The photo static display selections will come from the inventory of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Civil Relation Service of the AFP.

On Aug. 16, a fun run will be conducted at the GHQ with the participation of all the partner agencies.

Also on the same day, there will be a fun bike that will commence at the Fort Bonifacio Global City and will end at the AFP grandstand.

The Philippine Red Cross, in coordination with the Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo Station Hospital, will hold a bloodletting activity at the AFP grandstand on Aug. 16.

On Aug. 31, the Philippine Red Cross-Quezon City Chapter will organize around 30,000 National Capital Region-based students and AFP members for the Human IHL Formation at the GHQ parade grounds which is aimed at setting a new Guinness World Record.

This year’s national celebration of the IHL is hosted by the DND, in commemoration of the Aug. 12, 1949 signing of the four Geneva Conventions.
