16 killed, 13 wounded in Sulu ambush

From MindaNews (Jul 28): 16 killed, 13 wounded in Sulu ambush

Gunmen believed to be Abu Sayyaf bandits staged an ambush early Monday killing 16 people and wounding 13 others in Sulu, a military official said.

Capt. Ma. Rowena Muyuela, Western Mindanao Command information officer, said the victims were aboard two passenger vehicles with 11 other people when ambushed around 8:30 a.m. in Barangay Lower Talipao, Talipao town.

Muyuela said 10 of the fatalities were females while the other six were males. Most of those wounded were children.

She said it was not clear whether the victims were heading to the town proper of Jolo or on the way home.

She said troops were pursuing the bandits believed led by Idang Susukan and Sibih Pisih.

She added that 10 of the 40 passengers are members of the Barangay Police Action Team, a village-based group helping the government in the fight against lawless elements.

Meanwhile, Sulu provincial Gov. Abdusakur Tan II and his father Vice Gov. Abdusakur Tan strongly condemned the incident, which took place on Eid ul Fit’r.

  1. As noted in the article, the BPAT was probably the target of the ambush. Those caught up in the ambush were probably the wives, children and other relatives of the 10 BPAT members.
