From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 1): Sultan Kudarat cops on alert after arrest of outlawed Moro leader linked to arson

Police in the coastal town of Sultan Kudarat were placed on heightened alert after charges were filed against a Moro rebel leader allegedly behind the burning of the town hall last month.

Charges of arson, robbery, cattle rustling and extortion were filed against a certain Commander Jojo who was tagged as behind the burning of Palimbang town hall in early May.

He was arrested last week following weeks of surveillance operations, according to town administrator Sahara Maulana.

Citing police intelligence report, Maulana said the suspect who is now detained at the police detention cell in this city will be rescued by his comrades.

The total damages to the old and new town hall buildings were placed at about P15 million.

Maulana believed the local government earned the ire Commander Jojo after it ordered his eviction from the town hall compound due to expansion project like the construction of more town government offices.

Aside from arson, Commander Jojo was also charged with carnapping, possession of illegal drugs, large scale cattle rustling, among others.

Maulana assured the residents of Palimbang that police and military authorities are on top of the situation after rumors started circulating that Commander Jojo's followers who belonged to the outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), will rescue him from police custody.
