Rebel killed in early morning clash in Ifugao

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 5): Rebel killed in early morning clash in Ifugao

Troopers from the 54th Infantry Battalion have shot and killed a member of the New People's Army (NPA)'s "Kilusang Larangang Guerilya" (KLG) MARCO in Barangay Damag, Aguinaldo town, Ifugao Thursday morning.

The clash started 5: 30 a.m. It lasted for almost an hour resulting in the death of one NPA fighter and wounding of several others.

No losses were reported in the government side.

Recovered at the encounter site was a bandolier with six short M-16 magazines, a rifle grenade, improvised antenna for handheld radio and other subversive paraphernalia.

During the firefight, civilians in the area were used as human shields by the rebels as they took cover at their houses.

Lt. Col. Eddie Pilapil, 54th Infantry Battalion commander, said the presence of the NPAs was reported to them by concerned residents.

“The presence of the NPAs was reported by the civilians in the area who have grown tired and disgusted because of continued extortion activities of the NPA remnants in their barangay," he added.
