Andrea Rosal transferred back to Taguig jail

From Rappler (Jun 5): Andrea Rosal transferred back to Taguig jail

Rosal's lawyer says she was unaware of the decision

Political detainee Andrea Rosal was transferred back to her detention cell at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City on Wednesday evening, June 4, after a 2-week stay at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila.

According to a DZBB report Wednesday, Rosal was escorted by personnel from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) at around 7:20 pm through Gate 10 of PGH along Padre Faura street.

The gate is often used for the entry and exit of high-profile PGH patients intending to avoid the public and members of the press, a DZMM report said.

Both radio reports said Rosal's lawyer Krissy Conti was shocked by the transfer. She said she did not see any court order.

Conti said she called the Pasig Regional Trial Court Branch 266 and learned that their camp would be furnished with the order by Thursday, June 5.

Death of newborn

On May 17, Rosal gave birth to a baby girl who died of “persistent pulmonary hypertension” a day after. Following allegations that Rosal was not treated well under the bureau's watch, the BJMP clarified that Rosal's medical needs were attended to.

Her case sparked outrage among leftist activists and concern from mainstream society over the treatment of women in detention.

A daughter of the late rebel spokesman Gregorio Rosal, she was arrested on suspicion of links with the communist underground. Arresting authorities alleged that she is the secretary of the New People's Army (NPA) Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee.

Eight months pregnant at the time, Rosal was arrested on March 27 by joint forces of the Intelligence Services of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
